Mitt Romney Announces He Will Not Seek Reelection to Senate
In a video message to Utahns on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, Senator Mitt Romney announced that he will not seek reelection in 2024.
Romney, 76, said that he has decided to make way for a new generation of leaders. He has served in the Senate since 2019, after being elected to replace Orrin Hatch.
"It has been a profound honor to serve Utah and the nation," Romney said in his video message. "I have worked hard to represent our state's values and interests, and I am proud of the progress we have made together."
Romney is known for his bipartisanship and his willingness to work with Democrats on issues of common ground. He was the only Senate Republican to vote twice to convict former President Donald Trump in his impeachment trials.
In his video message, Romney said that he is committed to continuing to work on issues important to Utahns, such as water conservation, wildfire prevention, and economic development.
"I will keep working on these and other issues and I will advance our state's numerous priorities," he said. "I look forward to working with you and with folks across our state and nation in that endeavor."
Romney's decision to not seek reelection leaves the Republican Party in Utah with a number of potential candidates to replace him. Some of the names that have been mentioned include former Governor Gary Herbert, Congressman John Curtis, and businessman Spencer Cox.
The Republican primary for Romney's seat is scheduled to be held in June 2024.
Romney's announcement is a major development in Utah politics. He is one of the state's most prominent and well-respected figures, and his decision to not seek reelection will have a significant impact on the political landscape.
