Protests in Karnataka over Cauvery water release

Protests erupted in various parts of Karnataka on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, in opposition to the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu. The protests were called by farmers and Kannada organizations, and were backed by the opposition BJP and JD(S) parties.

The Cauvery water dispute is a long-standing one, with both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu claiming rights to the river's water. The Supreme Court has issued a number of orders over the years, allocating water to each state. However, the dispute has often led to tensions and protests on both sides.

The latest protests in Karnataka were sparked by a Supreme Court order on September 21, 2023, upholding an order of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) directing Karnataka to release 5,000 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu till September 27.

Karnataka farmers argue that they are already facing water scarcity, and that the release of water to Tamil Nadu would exacerbate the problem. They also point out that the CWMA order does not take into account the water levels in Karnataka's reservoirs, which are at a low level due to the recent drought.

The protests in Karnataka have been largely peaceful, but there have been some incidents of violence. In Bengaluru, police detained more than 1,000 people, thwarting a planned protest. In Mandya district, a farmers' group called for a bandh, which paralyzed normal life.

The protests have also had an impact on the political scene in Karnataka. The opposition BJP and JD(S) parties have accused the ruling Congress government of being soft on Tamil Nadu. The Congress government has defended its decision to release water to Tamil Nadu, saying that it is bound by the Supreme Court order.

The Cauvery water dispute is a complex one, with no easy solutions. The protests in Karnataka are a reflection of the deep-seated anger and frustration among farmers and other stakeholders. It is important for the governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to work together to find a solution that is acceptable to both sides.
